SUB-ARCTIC MARATHON CHALLENGE

In Aid of NHS Velindre Cancer Centre
THE CHALLENGE:

An unsupported snowshoe attempt to cover a marathon 26 miles across the sub-Arctic mountains of Sweden in 2 days. Along the way you'll cross frozen lakes, witness some of the most stunning scenery on the planet, have a go at Nordic Skiing, and hopefully get a glimpse of the Northern Lights, whilst raising much needed funds for Velindre Cancer Centre.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

In good weather the challenge is arduous but achievable for the relatively fit individual but it's rare to have a run of good weather in the Arctic. Suitable clothing and personal equipment is vital therefore, even if it goes unused.

You will be taught to use the emergency shelters we carry with us and how to build a snow shelter. The use of snowshoes will be employed throughout the challenge and while it's a relatively easy skill to adapt to, it can also be quite energy sapping so fitness levels must be of the appropriate level.

During the challenge the team will use pulks to carry back up equipment and you will be required to take a 'shift' in pulling these sleds.

Avalanches are common throughout the area but we should not encounter these.

It's likely that we will encounter some of the Arctic's wildlife and where this happens we are required to respect their space. Fauna of the area includes Brown Bear, Wolf, Moose, Reindeer, Beaver, Arctic Fox, Wolverine, and Lynx all of which is more likely to run away rather than toward you

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE:

You should be moderately fit in order to complete the challenge but it’s always my goal to ensure that you not only complete but enjoy the experience. To that end I organise regular team training sessions which you are welcome to participate in free of charge. We will cover roughly 13 miles on both days over a duration of 5-7 hours but if your confidence is a little low I have prepared training plans to fit your life commitments and get you where you need to be (just let me know). Training involves hikes in the Brecon Beacons and various other locations.
