THE CHALLENGE:

An unsupported attempt to cover 100km across the Arctic Circle in 7 days. Along the way you'll cross frozen lakes, skirt ancient glaciers, pass by the villages of the indigenous Sami people, witness some of the most stunning scenery on the planet, and hopefully get a glimpse of the Northern Lights, whilst raising much needed funds for Velindre Cancer Centre.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

This is not a holiday. No flash accommodation or spa treatments (save for the odd application of Sudocrem). This is a real expedition style challenge. The going is arduous but achievable for the physically fit individual. Don’t worry though, there will be plenty of training opportunities and a tailor made training plan for those who require it. As a base level guide you should be able to run a half marathon in under 3 hours but determination matters more.

During the challenge the team will use pulks to carry backup equipment and you will be required to take a 'shift' in pulling these sleds. Avalanches are common throughout the area but where conditions allow we should not encounter these.

It's likely that we will encounter some of the Arctic's wildlife and where this happens we are required to respect their space. Fauna of the area includes Brown Bear, Wolf, Moose, Reindeer, Beaver, Arctic Fox, Wolverine, and Lynx all of which is more likely to run away rather than toward you!

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE:

You should be moderately fit in order to complete the challenge but it’s always my goal to ensure that you not only complete but enjoy the experience. To that end I organise regular team training sessions which you are welcome to participate in free of charge. We will cover a lot of miles per day over a duration of 5-7 hours but if your confidence is a little low I have prepared training plans to fit your life commitments and get you where you need to be.

Training involves team building hikes in the Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes, and various other locations, as well as the odd beer and a bit of social stuff.
